WORDS OF WISDOM

Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy beds of roses,
Thy cap, thy kirtle, and thy posies,
Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten -
In folly ripe, in reason rotten.
(Sir Walter Raleigh, 1552-1618
The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd)

Melbourne Home and Garden Expo

Monday already! We had a lovely weekend, just wish it could have lasted a little longer. The weather was glorious, a real touch of Spring was in the air. Perfect for a trip into Melbourne for the Home and Garden Expo, a walk around South Bank and South Wharf and who could pass up the opportunity for some browsing around DFO. The Expo was disappointing as it didn't showcase the things we were looking for and was more about 'being green' with things like solar heating, saving water and recycled products. Even the gardening part was not up to scratch.

The Polly Woodside is one of the tall ships built in 1885 in Belfast, Ireland. She was a merchant ship in her day and is now moored directing outside the Melbourne Convention Centre and I must say looks quite striking sitting in all her glory in the middle of Melbourne in the Yarra River.

FEDERAL ELECTION 2010

In a democratic Australia I am very happy to have cast my vote in the 2010 Federal Election today. It's been a rocky road in politics lately and sitting here watching the vote counting on TV it is too close to call the winner. Will Australians elect in a general election their first female Prime Minister or will there be a change in Government for the next term.  At this stage we know that Australians have used their vote to demonstrate we don't like back stabbers, huge mining taxes and Anna Bligh but we do care about the environment. I know definitely what I am hoping for and I think I will be happy when victory is announced be it tonight or in a few days time when postal and absentee votes are taken into account! The winner on these election days is democracy.
Cheers,
Lynda

NOT A DROP

This is the Not A Drop scarf by Arlene's World of Lace. Yes I did have to rip out the first attempt at this pattern. My fault entirely as I lost a yarn over and couldn't work out how to pick it up again and not end up with the stitches twisted. When you understand how the pattern comes together it is not so easy to become bamboozled by all the yarnovers and you learn to be very careful about not letting one of them slip off the needle accidentally.
The pattern is well written, easy to follow and has the extra help of photos for the unusual bits. I'm enjoying knitting this scarf because of the different technique and I think its true beauty will show through when it is finished and has the benefit of blocking.
But so far so good...
Cheers,
Lynda

HONEY BEE

Little honey bee is very very cute. The pattern is from the Knitted Bears All Dressed Up book by Val Pierce. There are 20 wee bears to make and I for one won't be able to stop at just this one. The basic bear pattern is the same for all but there are different outfits for the bears. There is a baby bear, a bride and groom, a football bear, even a knitting bear so it will be a difficult choice to make but I think my next attempt will be the ladybird bear. These small bears knit up so quickly in DK yarn and are great for using up leftover scraps of yarn for the clothing.
The other knitting project that I have going at the moment is the Not A Drop scarf by Arlene's World of Lace. It is a lovely pattern but requires concentration in the beginning at least to make sure you don't lose any of the yarn overs. I made a mistake last night and haven't looked at it again today because I fear I might have to pull it out and start over. I hope not!
Cheers,
Lynda
